The objective of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate is to ensure that the resources available to the Garda Síochána are used to achieve and maintain the highest levels of efficiency and effectiveness in its operation and administration. This is measured by reference to the best standards of comparable police services.

To do this, we:

  • Undertake inspections or inquiries into the operation and administration of different aspects of the Garda Síochána. This is done either on our own initiative or if requested to do so by the Policing Authority or the Minister for Justice.
  • Submit a report of the inspection or inquiry, with recommendations for any action considered necessary, to the Minister for Justice. Any report submitted following an inspection must be laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.

  • Provide advice to the Policing Authority or the Minister for Justice with regard to best international policing practices if required.
